CIOs and Internet of Things : good recipe ?

The billions of sensors and connected devices that make up the IoT are a powerful source of business insights, according to The 1610 Group founder and managing consultant Scott Lowe.

Most connected devices are small, but he notes that there are exceptions. The Boeing 787 generates half a terabyte of data per flight in order to help airlines address potential routine maintenance issues more proactively and effectively at the same time.

The healthcare industry is another sector that is ready to benefit from Big Data. The number of medical devices per bed is increasing at an accelerated rhythm, and healthcare professionals are starting to take advantage from data in their work.

Lowe’s recap that “the sky is the limit” for organizations that can successfully exploit the Internet of Things, Big Data, and advanced analytics.

The bottom line:

CIOs have the opportunity to give aid to their companies create completely new revenue possibilities. It just takes an idea to get started and, with the ever increasing number of connected devices, the world is at your fingertips.

How to correctly used a connected object for a commercial goal ?

The internet of things is a new technology, and we discover day after day a new possibility to use it. We see it can help us, at home, for medical interest or any thing you can imagine. But, how to use if you’re a commercial brand ? Let see a beginning of an answer, thanks to Budweiser and its hockey red light.

Budweiser Red light

In ice hockey, each goal has a red light that flashes, rotates and makes some noise when the opposing team make a goal. The beer brand asked itself how to recreate at home the adrenaline rush fans have in the stadium.

The budweiser red light works by connecting to your wireless network. After syncing the light to your smartphone, you just have to configure your favorite team. During the game, the light is waiting and when your team make a goal, the light is going crazy, letting you live the thrill of the ice, like you’re in the stadium.

A very good idea from the brand that allows fans to live more intensely their passion for the sport, capitalizing on a single technology. Smart, simple and effective.

What is the value of connected objects?

We are often told that the connected objects will revolutionize our lives. They are becoming more and more and we can found useful objects, but also unlikely. But do they really create genuine interest in our lives, already very connected? We will try to provide some answers to this question!

Connected objects useful for everyday life
Some objects can help us to improve our daily life and avoid the small problems that can be encountered every day. For example, the start-up Koubachi has created a device that can meet a variety of information of your plants, once it is planted in the pot. The system sends you directly on your smartphone notifications to alert you when your plant needs to be watered or if it does not have enough light, so as not to let her die!

Connected objects to our health service
The company Withings launched the scale W-30, a new system with a wifi connection. The scale sends the results of each weighing to your Smartphone application and to the web platform dedicated to that. With this new device, the user can follow his weight curve on his smartphone, enter its objectives, and even calculate his BMI. The user can even share the results on Twitter and Facebook, to be encouraged by his friends. It is therefore an object which facilitates weight loss, and provides a fun dimension to diets!

Connected and fun objects
A fork that vibrates to help us eat more slowly and to be in better shape: this is the new creation of the French company Slow Control. In fact, this new generation fork has been designed to vibrate when the user eats too fast. It is connected to a web platform where the user can found its data (duration of meals, number of strokes forks, rhythm) and then set an alarm and personalize it.  A new way of eating, but that is not really useful or necessary.

The connected objects are created, for the most part, to improve our daily lives, using new technologies. Health, fitness, convenience, many objects have been proposed and we must choose the ones that are actually useful, to  avoid the risk of falling into overages gadget, fun and entertaining, but not very useful!

Connected light bulbs shine light on connected home

The home automation market is full of innovation, but the smart LED light bulb seams to be on the top of the priorities’ list for many electronics companies.

In the last year, a lot of companies have launch their own connected light bulbs, not only offering control of the luminescence but also an impressive energy-saving characteristics (thanks to LED technology) and the ability to connect them with other smart devices in the housev

But here are the best two examples in my opinion, the LIFX project, and the Philips Hue.

A new Kickstarter project aims to propose Wi-Fi connected light bulbs that allow changing the bulb’s color with the help of a smartphone. The bulb is called LIFX and thanks to the LED technology inside, it’s an energy saver when compared to traditional bulbs. You control the brightness and color directly from an iPhone or Android device using the LIFX application. The bulbs can be connected to other devices or services, and can notify you for example, when a new Twitter message arrives.

The electronics giant company Philips launched its new Hue product, a set of three connected bulbs capable of displaying a full spectrum of color using just a smartphone app, like the LIFX project. The Hue lamps are a luxury buy (helped by the fact they are exclusively available on and at the Apple Store) like the other connected light bulbs, but with open standards and a dedicating resources to continue improve the product (and welcoming developers), the Hue can be the product which stands out of the crowd.
